The resumption of important work on the main highways in the llorowhenua County will take place | to-day, when a commencement will be made with the bitumen penetration of the Shannon-Makerua section of about 2:‘ miles. This section, owing to unfortunate circumstances, had become the worst portion of the existing highway in regard to surface. The formation lias long been ready, but owing to the unavoidable holding-up of the work during the spring for financial reasons, the road became badly potholed. Travellers by the north and south route through, this district Avill he glad to see the completion of this piece of road, which ci'osses the Makerua swamp. When it is finished, the gang will proceed with the bitumenising of the TokomaruNorth boundary section, 2 miles 25 chains, the foundation for which is ready. Surfacing is now being done on the portion of road, a little over a mile in length, between the Shannon 'borough boundary and the Kara stream bridge. In consequence, this section is closed to all traffic uutil further notice, and through traffic is being diverted to the road on the western side of the railway. The highways scheme has re-en-tered on a period of steady progress, and the council has full gangs engaged on penetration and mctalerushing. Formation work will follow in due course. The plans are being awaited from the Public Works Department for this first formation job to be taken up this year, which is a length of about two miles from Law’s hill to Shannon. This will leave some three miles to complete on the Potts’ HillShannon section —namely, the length from Potts’ hill to Law’s hill. One other section has yet to be provided for, as regards formation, on Ihe Levin-Palmerston route. It is from Makerua to the Tokomaru bridge, a distance of about four miles.
