TO SWIM COOK STRAIT.
Ashburton, January 3. Miss Lily Copplestone, of Ashburton, will commence her attempt to swim Cook Strait at 2 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, from Cape Koamani, at the head pf Queen Charlotte Sound. Miss Copplestone will he accompanied by a launch conveying her mother, Mr. T. Hartigan (her manager), Mr. Hartley (its owner), Mr. Wisse (the helmsman), Mr. Whiting (editor of the “Marlborough Express”), newspaper representatives, a wireless operator, two officers of the New Zealand Swimming Council, and four fishermen (two from Wellington and two from Pieton). The presence of the fishermen will be invaluable, as they know the tides, currents and all peculiarities of the crossing.
