CRICKET.
HAWKE CUP MATCH. Palmerston N., December 26. Rain caused a postponement of play until the afternoon in the Hawke Cup match, [Manawatu v. Hawke’s Bay, which commenced here to-day. When stumps were drawn Manawatu had made 129 runs for the lost of six wickets. The wicket was fairly slow, but promised improvement if the rain held off. Details of the score at the end of the first day’s play are as follow: MANAWATU. —Ist Innings. Young, c. Mitchell, b. Beuth 8 Wild, e. Mitchell, h. Evans 3 PaCey, run out 20 MeVicar, not out 55 Galliohan, c. •Stevenson, b. Mitchell . 12 Norris, b. Beuth 10 Baumber, b. Beuth 5 Pegden, not out 4 Extras 14 Total for six wickets 129 In the Plunket Shield cricket match at Christchurch yesterday, Auckland knocked up 330 runs in their first innings. Canterbury made a very poor showing, being disposed of for 153 runs, and following on lost two wickets for 12 runs.
