NEW MAMMOTH CAR.

PLYING MILE RECORD. “The Golden Arrow” is the name chosen for the car which is now being constructed for an attempt to win back the world’s flying mile record for Great Britain. The record of 207* 'm;.p.b. was cade six months ago by Mr. J. M- White’s three-en-gined machine, but British designers are convinced that they can produce a car with a single engine which will beat the American record. Major H. 0. D. iSeagrave, the first driver to exceed a speed of 200 m.p.h. will be at the wheel of the new car and a test will be held over Daytona Beach, Florida, in February. The car is from the design of Captain J. S. Irving who was responsible for the twin-engined 1000 h.p. Sunbeam in which Seagrave attained 2031 m.p.h. The Golden Arrow is being fitted with a Napier engine developing 900 h.p. (j,t 3,400 revolutions. The power unit is an improved version of the Napier engine installed in the car in which Captain Campbell covered the mile at a speed of 206| m.p.h. The same model of engine Was fitted to the aeroplane which won the Schneider Cup at over 281 m.p.h. It is of the •broad arrow type, the twelve cylinders being disposed in three groups of four. 'The bore is s£in., and the stroke 5 i-Bin., and .the weight of the plant is 10001 b., or less than 1 l-81b. per h.p. The gear ratios: — Top, 1.475 to 1; second, 2.195 to 1; low, 4.47 to 1. 'The theoretical speeds corresponding to the engine speeds at which maximum power is developed are: 246 m.p.h., 166 m.p.h. and 81 m.p.h. The idea of 81 m.p.h. on low gear is interesting. Special tyres measuring 37in by 7in. are being tested and these components will require to stand the vast contrifugal forces operating with the driving wheels turning at about 2300 revolutions a minute. The wheel base is 13ft. and the track five feet, these dimensions being about the same as those of a large private car. The overall length is 26ft., the long, streamlined tail giving the car a massive appearance although it-is only 3ft. 9in. in height. Four wheel brakes are fitted and it is of interest that in spite of air resistence the machine would coast for five miles if the throttle was closed after reaching the maximum speed, and no braking was used. Seagrave will use a telescope arrangement for steering the car. A streamline sight is to be fitted on the front of the car and this will be lined up on a point on the beach when the car is attempting the records.
