RANGITIKEI RIVER CLAIMS TWO VICTIMS.
WOULD-BE SAVIOUR LOSES LOSES LIFE. Russell Ernest Burgess, 14 years of age, youngest son of Mr. F. C. Burgess, of Rongotea, and Robert Parker, 19 years of age, eldest son of Mr. Parker, also of Rongotea, were drownecKin the estuary of the Rangitikei River, near Tangimoana Settlement, about 3 p.m. on Sunday. From information to hand it appears that one boy was swimming near, an island in the river, and was in a whirlpool when he got cramp. The other "went to his assistance, and both were drowned. A third man swam out but had to come back. THE INQUEST. Accidental drowning was the verdict returned by the Coroner (Mr. E. Goodbehere) at an inquest held in Feilding yesterday. Evidence was given by Z. Uppicicli, of Feilding, and a fisherman who recovered the first body, as well as the fathers of the two boys.The body of Burgess was recovered on Sunday, and the body of Parker was recovered at the scene of the accident at 5 a.m. yesterday. SURF TRAG'EDY AT NEW PLYMOUTH. New Plymouth, December 9. Falling out of a flat-bottomed boat in the surf at Fitzroy beach yesterday, Percy Samuel Haskell, a labourer, of Smart road, was drowned. A boat containing Haskell, Thomas Edwin Lester and Harold Norman Berntsen was nearing the shore when a large breaker threw up the stern in which Haskell was sitting. *He was thrown forward and fell overboard. Another wave threw the boat ashore. The other two men saw Haskell stand up in the water up to his chest. He called for help and almost immediately disappeared. The boat was again launched and-the vicinity searched, but the body was not found until yesterday. Haskell is aged 42 and married, with four children.
