SCHEME TO OVERCOME SAND DRIFT NUISANCE.

TO GIVE MOTOR ACCESS TO BEACH. At yesterday’s meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board Mr. 0. Andrews, of Fitzherbert Street, Palmerston North, wrote outlining a scheme by means of which safe access could be afforded cars visiting the seaside and desiring to go out on to the ocean beach. Mr. Andrew’s idea was for the Board to have constructed several chains of gratings comprising lengths of four by two rimu planks wired together with..a space of several inches between the boards. These gratings could be laid on the sand between the old river bed and the ocean beach and vehicles with pneumatic tyres would have no difficulty in negotiating the present existing sandy stretch with safety. When the boards became sanded up it would be quite a simple matter for two men to go along and lift the gratings, which would be laid down in sections of say, 10ft. The sand would fall .readily between the planks and the gratings would then be again laid on the surface. Mr. Andrews estimated the cost of the grating at £6/11/6 per chain and considered that 425 ft. would be required. Mr. Nash said the idea was a good one but the trouble would be to keep lorries off the structure. The Board was not in a very financial state and he did not know where the money for the work would come from.

The secretary said it had been suggested that a levy be made on all using the grating.

, Mr. is( ash said that would entail paying a man’s wages to collect the toll and he did not think that the scheme would be very remunerative.

The chairman said he thought that the structure would have to be far heavier than was suggested. Mr. Berry said that the grating would take a lot of excavating once it became buried. Mr. Barber favoured the laying of flax bands, which made an excellent road and were very inexpensive. 6 It was decided to refer the matter to the Beach Committee for their consideration, owing to the Board’s lack of funds. ,
