A CHANGE IN THE WEATHER.
WELCOME RAMS M MANAWATUSEVERE STORM M WANGANUI. Welcome rain fell throughout Foxton and district yesterday, accompanied by a thunderstorm in the late afternoon. v A storm was felt with some severity in Wanganui on Sunday. The tram service .was crippled and all the electric current in the city and surrounding districts was cut off for two hours. Four large poles on the main public works line, 12 miles out, were shattered, portions of the wood being discovered 50 feet away, while in one case a pole was found to be blazing from top to bottom when the repair gang arrived. Two strings of insulators were also destroyed. The main line was out of action for four hours and the men on- the work did well to effect repairs in that time, as the Tnaterial had to be sledged out over rough country two miles from the main road. The fuses were blown in every house for miles around. Several exciting incidents are reported. In one case, a motorcyclist was just wheeling his machine on to the road, when lightning striking the back mudguard, flashed its way forward and played about the whole cycle. The owner escaped a shook, having his hands covered by rubber gloves.
