YOUNG MAN FOUND ON ROAD.

DIES OF FRACTURED SKULL,

A young man, James Selwyn Chappell, in the employ of Mr. W. P. Bishop, farmer, of Longburn, met with an untimely end in the early hours of Wednesday morning. He was observed by a motorcyclist lying across the roadway in Foxton Line, but owing to the darkness and wet night, not in time to prevent the motor cycle running over the lad’s shoulders. The sudden impact resulted in the rider being thrown from his machine, but he was not hurt. On going back in investigate, the youth Chappell was found to be seriously injured. Medical aid was summoned but before the doctor arrived, he had succumbed to a fractured skull. Chappell had come into Palmerston North for the Royal Show and was hidden farewell by a friend at about 1 a.m., it then being his intention to walk back to Longburn, Whether he was knocked down by an earlier passing vehicle or not is difficult to determine in the meantime, but a peculiar feature was that the deceased had not had sufficient warning to remove his hands from his pockets, they being still in that position when the police arrived on the scene. It is understood that the deceased was a native of Whangarei where his mother resides. An inquest will be held.
