FLAXMILLS HOLD-UP.
• APPLICATION TO AMEND AWARD. Application has been filed on behalf of the Flaxmillers’ Association with the 'Clerk of Awards to the Court of Arbitration to amend its provisions' as follows: — (1) By reducing all wages and piecework rates specified in clause 4 by 10 per cent. (2) By inserting in clause 4 time rates for the following operations : (a) Automatic scutching with pressing. (b) Automatic scutching 1 without pressing. “The grounds of the application in respect of the first claim are that the conditions of the industry have altered inasmuch as the price of hemp has fallen since the award was made to such, an extent as will not permit of the industry being carried on if the wages and rates of pay specified in the award remain in force, and in respect of clause 2 that subsequent to the decision of the Court dated September 17th, 1928, and in accordance with the recommendation to the parties contained therein the employers have conferred with representatives of the Union but have been unable to reach an agreement. “Power to amend the award in case of an alteration of the conditions of the industry was reserved by the Court when the award was made.
“Iti is further asked that this application be dealt with by tlie Court of Arbitration at Christchurch on the twelfth day of November, 1928.” .
