BOOKMAKERS FINED.
Auckland, Last Night. Admitting a charge of keeping a common gaming house, Sydney Montague Wynyard and William Kawitc, cousins, were fined £2O and £lO respectively in the Police Court. Chief-Detective Hammond said the two accused had been carrying on a bookmaking business for the months at an office in Alining Chambers. They had not been before the Court previously and were taking the risk in setting up. Counsel said William Wynyard was a clerk and had been doing casual work. His cousin had given him a position doing the same work. HiWinnoeenee was shown by the fact that he was in the office when the police called. The Chief Detectice: “He joined his cousin in the business.” Counsel said the two had not done very well and bad started only in a small way.
The Magistrate (Mr. Hunt): “Is that so? Well I will start only in a small way with a fine. I could inflict a penalty of £IOO but I will make it £2O for the head of the business and £lO for the other.”
