MANAWATU-OROUA RIVER BOARD.

A meeting of the ManawatuOroua River Board was held at Palmerston North on Thursday. There were; present: Messrs W. Carter (in the chair), B. G. Gower, H. Akers, H. Barber, J. C. Harrison, and R. Law. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs A. Seifert, A. Buchanan and R. Tanner. The Kairanga County Council wrote pointing out that it had received a request from the settlers on Hamilton’s Line to contribute towards river protection there. The work was one of considerable urgency and the Council were quite prepared to assist in view of the danger to the road, if the Board would: help in the matter. It was decided that as the Board had no funds available for the purpose nothing could be done. RE-CLASSIFYING LAND. Mr. W. B. Croad came before the Board to appeal against the classification of his farm for rating purposes. He stated that his land had been classed as A class, whereas it was high and dry and should therefore be classed C. He had been protesting for the past eight years and urged that his land should be re-classified. The chairman, Mi 1 . Carter, pointed out that if the Board altered the classification in this instance, the matter would be left open for the whole of the district to put in similar requests. His own land was also wrongly classified and he felt it was impossible to entertain the request. Other members of the Board stated that there were many others in the same position. The chairman stated that if the Board’s proposed scheme was put into operation the whole district would be re-classified. It was decided that the Board could not take any action in the matter. A similar request was received from Messrs W. and C. Coley and it was decided to reply that, as the rating was for administrative purposes only, no action could be taken at present, but that if the Board’s proposed scheme was put into operation the whole district would be re-classified.
