GANGER HIT BY TRAIN.
DIES IN HOSPITAL. The Wellington-Auckland express after leaving Shannon en route to Palmerston North at 4.30 yesterday afternoon ran into a ganger, Mr. W. Sherlock, a well-known resident of Tokomaru, about 400 yards south of the Kingston road crossing. ill'. Sherlock was proceedinghome to Tokomaru on a jigger and apparently failed to hear the express whistle until it was within a few yards of him. A high westerly wind was blowing. He attempted to throw himself clear, but-, the engine hit him and threw him down the embankment. The express pulled up quickly and then backed until the van was opposite the scene of the accident. Mr. Sherlock, who was badly cut about the head and was suffering from concussion and serious internal injuries was immediately placed in the van and taken to the Palmerston North Hospital. The unfortunate man was in a low condition and died at the hospital at 11.15 last evening. Mr. Sherlock is survived by a widow and five young children.
