THE HEMP MARKET.

AUGUST GRADING RETURNS. The grading returns for hemp, tow. and stripper slips for the month of August have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows: —

Twenty-four bales at Auckland, one at Wellington, 20 at Foxton and five at Lyttelton were rejected. The number of bales in each grade was as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last vear being given in parenthesis: — Good fair 173 (519), high fair ,'1243 (1550), low fair 738 (2813), common 231 (710), rejected 50 (156), condemned nil (62), a total of 2435 bales, as against 5810 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 3375 bales. The number of bales graded at each port was: —Auckland 858, Wellington 743, Foxton 366, Picton 36, Bluff 375, Lyttelton 57. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow graded:—

Four bales at Auckland and two at Foxton were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: —lst grade 69 (267), 2nd grade 253 (1.153), 3rd grade 238 (2.10), condemned 6 (44), a total of 566 bales, as against 1674 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 1108 bales. The number of bales-graded at each port was: —Auckland 260, Foxton 48, Picton 10, Bluff .144, Lyttelton 8, Waikuku 96. Stripper Slips:—'Sixteen bales at the Bluff were condemned, and 18 bales at Auckland and 19 at the Bluff were passed for export. The total number graded was 53 bales, as against 103 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 50 bales.
