LEAGUE FOOTBALL.

ENGLISHMEN WIN THE RUBBER, The English League team beat New Zealand in the Third League Test match at Christchurch on Saturday by six points to five. After reports of rough play from the West Coast and Dunedin the spectators fully anticipated that there would be further manifestations of it in the deciding game of the Test rubber, but expectations proved groundless. Although the game was played with exceeding grimness, although the margin of points was narrow, and although much depended on the result there was not a single nasty incident in the whole game. As a spectacle, the match was a disappointment. The defence of both sides, especially the tackling, was so strong that neither side could develop attacking movements easily. A feature of the game was the line-kicking duel which went on almost the whole game between the opposing full-backs, Duffy and Sullivan, and they left the field "with honours easy.
