WAIRARAPA DEFEAT MAXAWIHENUA BY FIVE POINTS
IN FAST GAME. Wairarapa had its third successive victory yesterday, when they defeated Manawhenua on the Palmerston North Showgrounds by 25 points to 20 after a fast, exhifira* ting exhibition of Rugby, in which Wairarapa’s superior condition was the deciding feature. Akuira started the ball rolling and the leather was returned to home territory after a series of scrums. The Manawhenua hacks were associated in a passing movement, but a mulled pass let Cooke break through. Stab punting over Williamson’s head, be was obstructed by the latter player, who was penalised, but Cundy failed to find the uprights. Wairarapa continued their aggressive tactics, minor infringements keeping them at bay until Manawhenua changed the venue of play with a penalty kick. . Receiving from H. Darragh Westwood transferred to Roberts, the wing three-quarter short punted and, following up fast, booted the leather over the line. Westwood beat Carmack to the force, and Akuira kicked a goal. Manawhenua s—Wlairarapas—Wlairarapa 0. Wairarapa retaliated with several short thrusts which were without avail. A miskiek by Darragh enabled Hart to improve the effort, handing on to McGregor, who fell ever the line'in being tackled by T. Para la. Cooke added the extra points':. Wiairarapa s—Manawhenua 5. Manawhenua came again. T. Parata kicked to Cormaek, who fumbled and allowed Darragh to get away with his forwards in attacking, McDonald sending a long pass lo Crawford, who hastened over. Almira failed with the kick. Manawhenua B—Wairarapaß—Wairarapa 5. Donald next, came round the scrum in possession, Cundy and Cooke participating before the latter drew Williamson and passed to Faulkner, who went across for a good try which Cooke failed to convert. The Manawhenua forwards resumed their "attack, and Wairarapa, being penalised for lifting in the scrum, Akuira made the most of the penalty by kicking a good goal. Manawhenua 11 —Wairarapa 8. ' P*y had scarcely been recommenced when W'aldin kicked the ball into Cundy’s hand's, it travelling along the line of backs to Jury, who gave a reverse pass to Cooke, but the latter was recalled for accepting a pass off-side. Not slackening in their endeavours, Wairarapa was successful in adding to "their score when Cundy capped a combined forward and hack movement by brushing off Robert’s tackle, and converting his own try. Wairarapa 13—Manawhenua 11. Fast following up by Akuira resulted in Stringfellow being caught in possession. 11. Darragh, receiving the leather, set out for the line, only to be overhauled by Cooke. The ball went out of touch. From the resulting serum, Y\ T . Parata cleverly worked the blind side to 11. Darragh, who dived over right in the corner, Akuira finding the angle too great. Manawhenua 14 —Wairarapa 13.
Upon resuming after the change of ends, Wairarapa found the sun very trying, and Manawhenua made the most of their advantage. W*aldin pounced upon Cormaek in possession, and paved the way for Galpin to cross near the posts. Akuira missed an easy kick. Manawhenua 17 —Wairarapa 13. Good tackling and fast following up the home forwards had the visitors bustled, and on the defensive. W. Parata sold the dummy on the blind side of the serum, sending Akuira and Roberts away. The last-named, however, was pushed out of touch. Sustaining the pressure, Manawhenua increased their lead whten Tataria, smothered a clear ing kick from Cormack’s boot, and fell over the line with the ball under him. He failed to convert. Manawhenua 20 —Wairarapa 13. Manawhenua seemed to lose their dash after this, and a strong attack culminated in Hart using the blind side of the scrum from beyond the quarter way, and, transferring at the right moment to Jury, who went over wide out. Cundy failed to improve the figure. Manawhenua 20 —Wairarapa 10.
Dominating the game, Wairarapa gave Manawhenua a taste of their own medicine, and the home team was hard pressed to maintain their lead. It was only by sound tackling that they were able to do so. After two unsuccessful efforts Hart rallied his forces, Cundy, Cooke, Slringfellow, and Fnulknor handling before Stringfellow accepted another pass to go over under the posts. Galpin smothered Candy’s kick. Manawhenua 20—Wairarapa 10. Wairarapa continued to hammer at the home line, and wrested the lead from Manawhenua, when Slringfellow and Jury worked their way down the sideline with the assistance of Cooke, Jury completing by scoring well out. Cooke failed with the kick. Wairarapa 22 —Manawhenua 20. Weak tackling by the home hacks cost them another three points, Fnulknor gaining ground before centring to Cooke, Avho lost no time in pouncing on the ball. Cundy failed with the kick. Wairarapa 25 —Manawhenua 20. Manawhenua had two good opportunities of snatching the game from the fire with two penalties, but neither Tataua lior Akuira Avere successful in their efforts, the game

The team are requested to assemble at the practice shed at 2 o’clock. A meeting of the combined Manawhenua Union was held in Palmerston North yesterday. The Wairarapa ugßbv Union advised that it had decided to play the Wairarapa-Manawhenua return match at Carterton on September 15. The Wairarapa Rugby Union adfirming August 11 as a Ranfurly Shield match with Canterbury. The Wellington Rugby Union intimated that it was prepared to'dispatch its A representatives to Levin to play Manawhenua on August 25. It was decided to commence the matell, at 2 p.m. The Horowhenua Council notified that D. Bailey of Maungatukn junior team had been disqualified for twelve months for disputing the referee’s decisions, abuse, obscene language and attempted assault. The action of the Horowhenua Council was confirmed. Mr. H. R. Crawford was appointed manager of the Manawhenua team for their forthcoming southern tour. Air. E. M. Ryder was appointed manager of the Manawhenua team for their match against Wanganui at Wanganui on August 4. Tt was decided that the venue of the Taranaki-Manawhenua match be altered from Levin to Palmerston North and that the game with Wellington he played at Levin. It was resolved that the selectors be asked to pick 21 players for life southern tour.
On the motion of Mr. Colquhonn it was resolved that in the event of Manawhentia’s meeting with Canterbury being a Ranfurly Shield fixture, the team he assembled two days before leaving for Christchurch. OLD BOYS DEFEAT HIGH SCHOOL. Yesterday afternoon at the racecourse Old Boys again defeated High School, the score being 0.8. 19—H.S. 12. ’ A
A short time after play commenced E. Ball crossed after a strong run. The kick failed. After a while Francis crossed and converted. From a forward rush Barrat crossed, the kick failing. The spell ended 0.8. 11 —H.S. nil. From the kick off H.S. pressed and Wlankly.li goaled from a penalty. Again H.S. pressed and Procter dropped-kicked a goal. Ball secured from half way and raced across, Francis converting. High School again crossed and .the kick was successful. In the last few minutes of play Anderson crossed. The game ended Old Boys 19 — High School 12. Tom Fuller refereed.
A practice of all Juniors will he held in the practice shed at 7 o’clock sharp this evening. Full attendance requested.
At Wanganui yesterday, Wanganui College defeated P. N. High School bv 25 to 3.
