From Mr. H. E. Garbett, asking the Council to reduce the rent for his kerbside benzine pump. After discussion it was decided tc. advise Mr. Garbett that the Council regretted that it could not see its way to reduce the rent of the pump. From Mr. A. Fraser, accepting the position of borough assessor. — Received. TREE PLANTING.
The Mayor brought forward a suggestion that the Council should consider the question of inaugurating a tree planting scheme for the Target Reserve. The trees planted on this reserve in the past were making good progress and lie thought it would be a good idea to do a little planting out of Reserve money each' winter. Cr. Walker said that the reserve would be easier to lease if good “breaks” were planted around it. Cr. Rand did not think it advisable tc fill the.reserve up with trees. The boundaries were already planted as far back as the Round Bush. He had noticed that deer had caused a good deal of damage to tho young trees in that locality.
The Mayor said the idea was to ilant the valueless . strips with
trees. It was decided that the Reserves committee inspect the reserve with a view to carrying out further planting, the committee to have power to act. FIRE BOARD REPRESENTATION Cr. Roore brought up the- question of Council representation on ihe Foxton Fire Board. He said the Mayor and Cr. Parkin were the Council’s 'twj) representatives on the Board, but owing to business reasons Cr. Parkin had not been able to attend more than one or two meetings. He was of opinion that the Council should have stronger representation on the Board. The meetings were convened by the 'Chairman (Mr. Cray), and so arranged to work in with Otaki and Levin.' By arranging the meetings for Fridays at 1.30 p.ra., the Board had to pay only one third of the travelling’ expenses, Levin and Otaki each paying their proportion. Cr, Parkin: We pay and get nothing for it. The meetings are held at 1.30 p.m. on Fridays and if that time suited anyone he did not know who it was. Any other day in the week would suit him but a Friday. The Mayor said that the Council did not have sufficient representation on the Board with only one representative. The members had always’ treated him very liberally, but he felt that he should have a colleague at the meetings to repre-’’ sent the Council. It was decided to take no action.
Leave of absence was granted Cr. R. J. Thompson-.
