INCREASE IN HARES
IN MANAWATU DISTRICT.
The activities of the Manawatu Rabbit Board has been responsible for the almost complete eradication of the rabbit pest in the Manawatu district, but hares, on the other hand, appear to be greatly on the increase. At the monthly meeting of the Manawatu Rabbit Board on Thursday the inspector (Mr. D. R, Barron) reported that as a result of a poisoning on his property, one farmer had killed four rabbits and 43 hares. There were of hares in the Board’s district. The chairman said that hares had a beaten track across the road near his property, which they traversed to reach a paddock of swedes. Mr. J. F. McKelvie said that some years ago hare drives used to be inaugurated on his property at Carnarvon, when hares used to be plentiful in that locality but last year only 20 were caught. Mr. Gloyn considered large numbers of hares were killed by stoats and hawks. The chairman: It’s a wonder they survive the way they do in the open country.
It was decided to give consideration to the matter of taking steps to have the protection removed from hares in this district all the year round.
