FOXTON BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

SPECIAL MEETING

A special general meeting of the Foxton Beautifying Society was held in Ross’s Rooms on Thursday evening, presided over by Mr. M. E. Perreau (President). There were also present Messrs J. K. Hornblow, W. 11. Nicholas, B. Stewart, D. Christie and D. R. Barron. There was not a quorum present but it was decided to go on with the business which could be approved at the next meeting of the Society. The President said the chief business was the election of a secretary to fill the vacancy caused by Mr. McMurray’s removal from the district. It would also be necessary, at an early date, to go into the question of means of raising funds to enable the Society to carry on its good work. The Society had carried out many improvements in the town and it would be a pity to allow these to go back at this stage for the lack of funds to keep up the maintenance. Mi 1 . D. R. Barron was unanimously elected secretary. The question of raising funds for the Society was given full discussion. Mr. Christie considered that it might be advisable to combine with the' local Plunket Society in arranging some big effort. The Plunket Society had made application to the McCarthy Trust for a grant to put the old bandroom in order as a Plunket room, but it was doubtful if the Trustees would grant same as the money was not required for the erection of a new building. The President said that he believed the ladies of the committee favoured an effort to be held about September. The President said that the Society had only about £l9 in hand and some effort of a small nature was urgently required to meet the Society’s liabilities. Mr. Nicholas asked if the Council would give a picture benefit for the Society. The President said lie thought the Council might favour such a suggestion. It was decided to defer the matter in the meantime and the convening of a meeting to meet the ladies on the subject was left in the hands of the President. It was decided to revise the rules at the next meeting with the object of reducing the quorum for meettings. Accounts amounting to £7 14s Od were passed for payment.
