TRANS-TASMAN FLIGHT.

WHERE WILL THE SOUTHERN

CROSS LAND?

The definite announcement that Captain Ivingsford Smith is to attempt to cross the Tasman Sea from Melbourne to some point in New Zealand has created immense interest throughout the Dominion. The Mayor of Wellington has forwarded the following cable message to Melbourne:— “Strong representations made to me to urge you make Wellington your landing place in New Zealand should you fly here. Assure you of very hearty welcome. —Troup, Mayor.”

A suggestion that the aviators be requested to land at or near Palmerston North during the Manawatu Winter Show, was made at a meeting of the Manawatu and West Coast, A. and P. Association by the chairman, Mr. J. Linklater, M.P., and it was decided to approach the Minister fo Defence (Hon. F. J. Bolleston) in the matter. A landing, said Mr. Linklater, could be made at any of several places in close proximity to Palmerston N., and as, during the show, there would be one of the largest concourses of people in New Zealand, it would be a most appropriate thing if a landing could be brought about. Gillespie’s paddock, about two miles from The Square, Mr. Linklater considered, would form an excellent landing ground, or failing that there was a hundred acres at his own property where there would be no difficulty in landing.

The Mayor of Dunedin has cabled to Ivingsford Smith on behalf of Dunedin citizens: “Offer sincere congratulations on your successful (light and extend to you and your companions a hearty invitation to visit this city. The Otago Aero Club is arranging for a landing ground. Full particulars will await you on your arrival at Christchurch.”

•Christchurch has also put in a claim for the landing to take place at Sockburn.

The Foxton seaside has already been mapped out as a suitable emergency safe landing place and in a direct line for a trans-Tasman flight.
