MANAWATU-OROUA RIVER BOARD.
The regular monthly meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua River Board was held at Palmerston North on Thursday, Mr. W. S .Carter presiding. Also present were: Messrs A. Seifert, B. G. Gower, R. Tanner and A. Richardson. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs PI. Akers, D. Buchanan, J. E. C. Harrison and H. Barber.
Plans and a copy of the proposals of the Manawatu County to erect a stopbank above the old Shannin bridge on the Manawatu River were received from the Public Works Department. For the purpose of financing the work, the council was asking that the unexpended balance of authorities to the Manawatu River Board and the Sluggish River Board, amounting to £329 4s 9d, be made available. The department stated that it was made a condition, when the sums were granted, that any work proposed to be done by the drainage boards or the county-council should be placed before the board for approval before the department would give its consent to the work. — It was decided to agree to the proposal, and to the amount being made available to the council. Permission was granted the Buckley Drainage Board to deepen the Koputuroa Stream from the railway bridge to the Koputuroa railway station to the Manawatu River. Mr. F. C. Hay, engineer to the Manawatu Board, reported that the work would not disadvantageously affect any interests of the hoard.
Discussing the flood indicators, Mr. Gower stated that the engineer had informed him that the machines had been ordered only this week, owing to a “hold-up” with the Government officials. They would, however, be installed at an early date.
