A MUCH MARRIED MAN

SENT UP FOR TRIAL. Christchurch, Last Night. The two women with whom George Creasy, aged 56, went through the marriage ceremony, gave evidence tagainst him at the Magistrate’s Court to-day on a charge of bigamy. Accused, according to the evidence for the prosecution, had been married three times. His first wife died and he lawfully married his second wife in England, coming to New Zealand with her in 1922 and settling at Invercargill. The husband, it was alleged, failed to maintain her and although frequently sued for maintenance, would not pay.

A little over a year ago, his wife, exasperated by these repeated failures to secure maintenance, threw a solution of caustic soda in the man’s, face. For this she was sent to gaol for twelve months. While she was in gaol, however, Creasey advertised for another wife. The advertisement was answered by Alice Mabel Humphries and the pair uere married on January sth, 1928. About the middle of April Creasey left her without telling ’why he was going.

The defence raised or suggested was that the second marriage was illegal as the woman had a husband living.

Accused was committed for trial
