TOWN CLERK’S SALARY.

INCREASE UNANIMOUSLY AGREED TO.

It lias been recognised for some time past that the Town Clerk has not been in receipt of a salary commensurate with his duties or in keeping with the salaries paid by other local bodies of similar size throughout the Dominion. Mr. Trueman has not, however,, made application for an increase despite the fact that his duties and responsibilities have greatly increased since his salary was fixed some years ago.

At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council the Mayor brought up the question and said that for the work done by the Town Clerk the remuneration was inadequate. There was a possibility of the Council losing the services of (Mr. Trueman in the future if his salary was not brought into line with those of other boroughs of the same size as Foxton. His salary was now £365 per annum, his last increment being in 1921. Since then the work had increased annually.

Cr. Walker outlined the figures paid by other boroughs of similar and smaller size than Foxton all of which were - £4OO and over. Cr. Walker made eulogistic reference to the work of the Town Clerk, and suggested that the salary be increased to £425.

Crs. Thompson, Parian, Ross, Lucinsky, Rand and Rangiheuea. all spoke in high terms of Mr. Trueman’s services. Cr. Rand expressed the opinion than other employers could follow the Council s example. Wlhen they had a good man they, should treat him well* It was a good thing to go into such a matter before the Town Clerk was forced to do so himself. Cr. Walker mentioned that there would be. a vacancy within a. short time in the South Island, the salary for which was £525 per annum.

It was unanimously decided to increase the Clerk’s salary by £6O per annum as from the Ist April, 1928. >

The Clerk thanked the Council, and assured them that it was a pleasure to work for such a fine body of men.
