BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Borough Council was held last night.CORRESPONDENCE
was read and dealt with 'as follows: —• •
From J. Purcell, applying for the use of a room in the building at the rear of the Council Chambers. — Granted at a rental of 5/- .per week.
From the Foxton Fire Board asking that the fire plugs in the borough be more distinctly marked.
The Mayor said that the work 4 of keeping the plugs clear was costing the Council a considerable , amount each year over and above its contribution. The waterworks foreman was giving the matter attention and the letter was received.
the Geraldene Borough Council wrote stating that some years ago they obtained information for the Town Clerk re the running of Municipal Pictures, and they now reported, after several years of operation, that they were doing very well.—Received. From the Minister of Internal Affairs enclosing Gazette extracts re the Borough’s loan for the borough contribution towards the cost of the Shannon Bridge.—Received, during the year.—The report was adopted. GENERAL. The Town Clerk submitted a comprehensive annual report ( particulars of which will appear in our jiiext issue). The Mayor thanked .the Clerk for his comprehensive report and congratulated him on his work during the year. (The report was adopted). The question of repairing the pound cottage was referred to the Works Committee. Cr. Walker reported that a hedge in Avenue Road required cutting back off the footpath. Referred to the road foreman. Cr. Rand asked if the Purcell Street footpath could be" put in order before winter set in. The Mayor said that the work was next on the order paper to the draining Work which had to be carried out before the wet weather set in. It would be done before winter. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The gas manager reported that several blocked services were attended to during the month and a leak in Union Street repaired. An extra bench of retorts was prepared and is now ready for lighting up. An estimate of £3l 5s 6d to instal the gas in Victoria Park for the use of motorists was, also submitted.
The Mayor said the esitmates to lay the gas into the camping area' was very high, and he did not think it would be wise for the Council to undertake such a large expenditure at present. ' (Cr. Walker suggested that the matter be referred back to the Chamber (if Commerce. If they were to pay 50 per cent, of the cost of the work the Council should undertake the work. The report was adopted and it was decided to refer the estimate to the Chamber of Commerce. The Mayor reported that during the month he and Cr. Boss inspected the ‘works and found everything in a fair state. The manager had no suggestions to make for the better running of the works, but intimated that at an early date the retorts would have to be given serious consideration. He also suggested that in the near future the Council should put on a man to allow him to inspect the state of the gas mains the leaky state of which, he thought might be responsible for the high percentage of unaccounted for gas. each month. . '■■ . ' WIATBB AND DRAINAGE REPORT. / The waterworks foreman reported that during the month sewers were cleaned out in Norbiton Road, and three water services extended. Water meters were read and repaired where necessary, and a new fire plug indicator was erected. Dog registration fees were also collected, and notices sent out to owners of property on which noxious weeds were growing. ROAD FOREMAN’S REPORT. The road foreman reported that during the month the road staff had been engaged on the following works: —(Repaiirinjg (breaks ip bitumen Victoria, Park Streets, and Avenue Road; top-dressing footpath fronting High School, repairing damage caused by washout at south end of Main Street; trimming willows obscuring view of road junction of Whyte and } Johnston Streets; cleaning drains Awahou, ’Johnston Street and Avenue Road, and general maintenance work. During the present month the work of cleaning drains will receive the attention of the staff. Road repair will also be atn tended to.
