FOXTON RETAIN McKELVIE SHIELD.

School teams (boys and girls), again showed their supremacy in athletics by winning the handsome MeKelvie Shield (competed for by schools within a 20-miles radius of Sandon) for the second year. The runners-up w r ere Manchester Street, Feilding. 'Special mention was made by the headmaster (Mr. F. Mason), in receiving the trophy, of the fine performance put up by the Rangiotu school team. He said that Foxton D. H. School were not “pot hunters,” although the winning of so many trophies made it appear so. The main objective was to develop the physical side of the pupils in order that they should have a sound mind in a sound body. The physical side, however, was not allowed to outweigh the moral, scholastic and social side of school life, but each was interwoven. Mr. Mason paid a fine tribute to the Sandon Athletic Club for the opportunity it afforded the children of the district to fraternise and learn tho lessons of victory and defeat in the true sporting spirit. The school team gave hearty cheers for the competing teams and to Mr. MeKelvie, the donor of the trophy. Mr. J. Linklater, M.P-., congratulated the winning team and complimented the Sandon Athletic Club upon the success of the gathering.
Mr. J. K. Hornblow, in presenting the Hornblow’ Shield to tho Ohakea School, congratulated the winners and said the trophy was to encourage athletics in the smaller schools of the district. The headmaster of the Ohakea School called for cheers for the donor.
