At last night’s Borough Council meeting accounts amounting to £1859 13s 3d were passed for payment.
Hugh‘O’Reilly, chemist, of Eastbourne (Wellington), was convicted of sly-grog selling and fined £2O. An appeal against the conviction has been lodged.
At Rugby at Cardiff on Saturday, Ireland beat Wales by 13 points to 10. The County Championship final at Bradford resulted in Yorkshire beating Cornwall by 12 points to 8.
Prizewinners at the last Labour Social Club’s euchre tournament were as follows: —Mesdames Harper, ©and and K. Hirini, 'and Messrs C. Coley, Desjardines and R. Easton.
Mr. H. Hornblow, local stationmaster, will be entertained at a smoke concert in the Masonic Hall to-morrow (Wednesday) evening at 8 o’clock, to which business men and citizens are cordially invited. A. E. Cooke, the All Black, is brandling out in a new role. At (he Masterton Amateur Athletic Club’s meeting, he won the 100 yards handicap off 9 yards, and was second in the 75 yards handicap off 7 yards. Cooke won the long jump off 6 inches, with a jump of 20 feet 3 inches. .
• Two members of the 19th Battery attired in primitive Maori Costume (male and female), and mounted on horseback, placarded with notices of to-night's entertainment paraded through the /streets this afternoon and caused much amusement. The instinct of animals is well known, says the Hawera Star-, and none perhaps shows it more than the horse. A' local trainer says that on Wednesday .mornipg lie was riding from the course, and several minutes before the earthquake his horse stopped and trembled. He could not imagine what was wrong until the shake occurred. The body of Francis Woodham, a married man, aged 53, of Papanui, was found this afternoon in a drain in Winters Road, Papanui, with his throat cut on Saturday. Woodham had suffered from insomnia following ill-health. It is stated that he had been much upset by the Foster murder and suicide which took place in the house next door to his own and that it preyed on his mind. He disappeared from his home on March 3 saying that he was going; for a walk and since then had not been seen alive.
At last night’s Borough Council meeting the poundkeeper reported that during the month eight head of stock were impounded and driving fees to the amount of 7/- collected.
Mr. P. King, a member of the P. and T. gang, engaged in shifting some telegraph poles yesterday received some badly crushed fingers as a result of getting his hand jambed by a pole.
As the result of a collision between' a motor cycle ridden by T. Woods and a, motor ear driven by Dr. J. F. Richards at Auckland yesterday afternoon, the former was taken to hospital suffering from very severe concussion of the brain. Those present at last night’s Borough Council meeting were the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perreau), and Crs. R. Thompson, John Ross, C. Spring, S. E. Cowley, R. Rangiheuea, F. Lucinsky, C. Rand, E. Parkin and the Town Clerk (Mr. 'Win, Trueman). An apology for absence was received from Cr. M. H. Wta.lker.
Mr. John Fisher, the president of the Waikato Show, was very outspoken in a. recent speech about farmers and finance (states an exchange). He said: “The farmers are prosperous to-day, some people say they are hard up, but I say they are not. Just look around to-day and see how well they all look here,” and, he added, “The county council of which I have the honour to be a member, lias had all its rates paid up.” “Considerable possibilities of useful load exist in developing the application of electricity to breadbaking” (stated the report of the Electricity Committee to the Christchurch City Council). “As the re-quirements-are special, and the hours represent chiefly off-peak loading, the committee has decided to offer a rate of id per unit, and it is hoped that at this figure electrical installations may compete effectively with alternative types of bread-baking ovens.” The council endorsed the recommendation.
