POSSESSION OF OPIUM.
TWO CHINESE FINED
Palmerston N., March 12,
The case in which two elderly Chinese, named Wye Gee and Ah Kum, both of Palmerston North, were charged with having been found with prepared opium in their possession, which" was adjourned last week on account of there being a defect in the information, came up before Mr J. L. Stuot, S.M., in the Palmerston Magistrate’s Court again this morning.
For the police, Mr Cooke quoted authority whereby a Magistrate could, if he saw fit, amend an information ujrfler certain conditions, and as these conditions applied in the present case, His Worship accordingly amended the information by striking out the word “complaint.” For the defendants, Mr Rutherfurd stated that neither of his clients were in a position to pay anyAvhere near the amount of the minimum penalty, and pointed out that by a further amendment of the charge a penalty of £l2 10s could be imposed. After further consideration the Magistrate entered a conviction, inflicting fines of £l2 10s in each case, costs amounting to 15s. A period of three months was granted in which to pay the fine.
