Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, MARCH 13, 1928. “SQUARE PLUG IN ROUND HOLES?”
AYE sometimes wonder whether (lie public realise what our educational system is costing them and whether parents take the trouble to ascertain the process of educational development in the lives of their children. It is possible that greater interest would be manifested if they paid directly instead of indirectly for education. To many people our educational system : :s commonplace. The children go. to l school and there the matter ends. The system, however, exists, to educe, develop and mould the lives of future generations and in this connection much depends upon the expert knowledge of the teacher..; At present the supply of teachers Exceeds the demand. The training of the teacher is, of course, a vital factor in our educational system. Can it be said that each teacher who undergoes a course of training for the profession is “called” to the work and enters it with that enthusiasm which characterises! tho expert? This phase of our educational system demands an even closer scrutiny than the revision of the curriculum and it is hoped that it has been discussed at the conference between Director and Inspectors. If the teaching profession is being entered as a mere convenience, then the sooner a drafting process is recognised as an essential at the Training College the better it will he for the future of the State.
