ATTEMPTING TO DEFRAUD THE CROWN.
D’ALKEMADE SENTENCED. At the Palmerston N. Supreme Court yesterday, C. H. de Mey D’Alkemade came before His Honour, Mr Justice MaeGrfegor for sentence, having been found guilty of attempting to defraud the Crown of a seiurity. “He has been found guilty of the offence on very clear evidence,” sta- • ted His Honour, “and the facts show that he has had advances from the Crown and has indeed been very leniently treated. He owes the Crown over £9OO, and last year he tried to sell'some of his cpttle over which there was a security, and it was his obvious intention to put the money in his pocket. The penalties for the offence are up to two years’ imprisonment or a fine of £IOO, and, as he is an undischarged bankrupt, it would be illogical to inflict the fine. On the jury’s recommendation to mercy, howeverj I will sentence fhe prisoner to nine months’ imprisonment with hard labour.”
