SWIMMING CLASSES FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN.

Now that swimming baths have been erected in our town, the headmaster of the local District High School has arranged with the Borough Council for the use of the baths daily for the teaching of (swimming daring the summer months. The intention is to substitute swimming for physical drill during these months, and as far as possible to make the lessons compulsory. The children will be marched to and from the fifths in their classes and will be under the charge of their teachers.

Land-drill for (lie teaching of life-saving will also'be taken. The hours for the various classes will be as follows : Standards 3 and 4: 10 to 10.30 a.m. Standards 5 and 6: 11.30 to 12 noon. Secondary: 2.15 to 2.45 p.m. As no charge is to be made, it is hoped that every child in the above classes will attend and that at the end of the season the school will be able to show a substantial increase in the number of children able to swim over the number returned last year.
