HIGHWAYS MAINTENANCE

PUBLIC WIORKS ASKS FOR EXPLANATION. At Tueslay’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council, the Public Works Department asked for an explanation as to why the maintenance cost of highways is being exceeded to the extent of approximately £I,OOO. —The chairman explained that he had called on the Department in Wellington and explained that the additional maintenance was incurred through wet weather and excessive wear on the Bulls-Sanson highway, the Whirokino road and the Rangiotu-Himi-tangi road. With this explanation the Department had approved of the expenditure and had authorised a grant to meet the cost. The department also forwarded £622 14s 7d subsidy in respect of maintenance of highways and £1396 16s 2d in respect of construction work on highways.
