A NEW COMET.
VISIBLE TO THE NAKED EYE. Wellington, Dec. 5. A new comet was observed at Wanganui at 8.35 on Sunday evening by Mr Hilton. Mr Gawitli, of Hawera, picked it up a few minutes later. It, has a large nucleus, a widely spread head, and a large tail. It is situated in the constellation Nonna, which is further south than the Scorpion. SEEN BY LOCAL RESIDENTS. Mr G. A. Tyer, of Russell Street, informs us that the new comet was easily visible locally last night m the south-western portion of the sky. To the naked eye it looked like a fair sized star with somewhat indistinct indications of a tail. A powerful pair of field glasses disclosed a large nucleus with’ a long attenuated tail. From Park Street, looking south, it appeared wVH up in the sky, in an almost direct line with the street. Several other local residents have also reported having seen the comet.
