CORRESPONDENCE.

(To the Editor). Wednesday, 23rd November—at last a glorious summer’s day! The shops closed at noon. The long “Sidey” afternoon and evening before us. Father, mother and the children need an outing, so into the car and away! Where to? Why, the Beach, of course! A quarter of an hour, and we’re at the end of the Beach road—that’s as far as we got with the car. The road was invisible, and sand several feet deep barred further progress. Now, Sir, this is just too bad, and it really is .high | time something was done. The Beach is an asset to Foxton, and access to it should be made as easy and pleasant as pos- ' sible. Folk from Palmerston N. told me yesterday they had come down for the first time, and would come often if only they could be assured of better roads. J made it clear that they could hope for something better next time, they came. But really, Sir, is the strip of road right at the Beach entrance ever very good? It is not, and some day a collision will occur on it—l am, etc., w!ake UP. (To the Editor). , ■Sir, —'Can you inform me how long it will be before the Manawatu County Council spend some—of the petrol tax money on proving the Palmerston-Foxtoni highway? I reieived a ciriular letter from the County with my rate demand some time ago wherein it was stated how economical that body is in regard to its maintenance account as compared with some .other counties. But the comparison is odious. This highwav is as much used as the Wanganui-San-son-Palmerston highway, yet little or nothing has been spent on the former, the same old cow tracks round bends still exist and the ruts are a “corker.” If the money expended by the County on the BullsSanson section which was in good order, had been spent on the Fox-ton-Palmerston section it would have benefited the ratepayers in the district who contribute most to the revenue of the County. Far too much money has beein spent in the northern end of the County and its time the southern end got a look in. Thanking you in anticipation, I anf, etc., RATEPAYER.
