Mr R. Q. Millcij, who officiated as manager of the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand during Mr S. H: Poole’s absence, left for Wellington to-day. The Rev. G. W. Dent, of Palmerston North, will leave for England on a holiday visit in January. He will be accompanied by his daughter, who until recently was a mem T her of the local D.H. School staff. Mr. Edwin Roland Clunies Ross, of Day’s Bay, Wellington, widely known for his interest in Dominion yachting matters died on Tuesday last at the age of 58. He leaves a widow and two children, twins, aged 19.

Air. A. J. Wilson, of Palmerston North, has been appointed chairman of stipendiary stewards by the Racing Conference, in succession to Mr. John McMahon, who left for Sydney last week to take l up the position of chairman of the A.J.C. stipendiary stewards. The death is announced of the Marquess of Cambridge, brother of Queen Alary, and eldest son of the late Duke of Teck and military secretary to the War Office, j and G.H.Q. during the war. He was 59. He married in 1894 Lady Alargaret Grosvenor, third daughter of the first Duke of Westminster, and' leaves a family of two sons and two daughters. He is succeeded by his son, the Earl of Eltham.

A gathering of 1000 representatives of the Roman Catholic clergy and laity, took part in the funeral obsequies at Hawera yesterday morning of the late Very *Rev. Alonsignor Power. Rerjuiem Alass was celebrated by Alonsignor McKenna, of Masterton, .and Archbishop O’Shea delivered a panegyric on the life and priestly virtues of the deceased. The burial took place at the Hawera cemetery. The cortege was one of the largest ever seen in the district, taking eighteen minutes to pass a given point. Aliss Isabel Wilford, daughter of Mr. T. M. Wilfosd, ALP., was the .centre of a remarkable scene at the Lyric Theatre, London. She unexpectedly replaced Tallulah Bankhead in “The Garden of Eden” owing to an illness of the latter. Between the second and third acts the audience was most enthusiastic, and would not allow the orchestra to commence. It cheered for five minutes, the whole length of the interval. Seldom has such an- instantaneous success been achieved at a West End theatre. His Excellency the GovernorGeneral (Sir Chas. Fergusson) has forwarded to the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs, the following telegram on the occasion of the. death of the Alarquess of Cambridge : —“On behalf of the Government and people of New. Zealand, I beg you will convey to Her Alajesty the Queen their deep and respectful sympathy in the death of Her Alajesty’s brother, the late Mai'quess of Cambridge.” A week of full mourning' in the Court has been ordered by the King for the Alarquess of Cambridge’s death.
