MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE.
JOCKEY GUILTY OF NEGLIGENT DRIVING. Auckland, October 26. The trial of the jockey, Walter Scott Bagby, aged 20, on charges of manslaughter and negligent driving arising out of the death of Mrs. W. S. Short, who was knocked down and killed by accused’s motor car on the night of September 26, took place at the Supreme Court to-day. Evidence for the Crown was on similar lines to that at the Police Court hearing on October 13, and no evidence was called for the defence. The jury retired at 2.50 p.m. and shortly before 8 p.m. returned a verdict of not guilty of manslaughter, but guilty of negligent driving, causing the death of Mrs. Short. Bagby was fined £IOO and his license was cancelled for two years. He was allowed one month in which to pay.
