LICENSING LAW.
THE BILL’S CHANCES
THOUGHT TO BE REAIOTE.
Wellington, Yesterday,
Although the Prime Minister has promised, that the Licensing JBill will be brought down this session and the House given a chance of dealing with it, there is no certainty that the measure will be passed into law this year. Whatever proposals the Bill will contain will be sure to provoke much discussion, and it is known that an effort will be made to eliminate the State Purchase and Control issue from the ballot-pap-er. Members are preparing to arm themselves with all manner of amendments, and it is understood that one member, who is vigorously opposed to Prohibition, has at least fifty alterations to propose to the existing law. The session is now entering on its final stages, and there are still a number of important measures to be dis posed of, some of which will be very contentious, such as the Religious Exercises in Schools Bill, the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment, and the Gaming Amendment. In these circumstances, and seeing that a desire is growing to close the session’s business down in about the second week in November, if possible, sonic members are of the opinion that the chances of doing anything very serious in the way of amendments’ to the Licensing law this year are somewhat remote.
