RAILWAY BUSES.

A COMPENSATING LOSS,

A net loss of £99. on road motor services conducted by the Railway Department since November 10 last is recorded in the 'annual report of the Railway Board, presented to Parliament yesterday.

The buses running between Napier and Hastings were stated to be paying their expenses, while the service in the South Island had effected a saving in 'the running of mixed trains, which more than compensated for the loss involved in the running of the busses. The venture in both Islands had been sufficiently successful to warrant the Department extending the scheme to other localities where there was the possibility of regaining the traffic lost, and at the same time making a substantial saving in the operating expenses of the line. Proposals were now under consideration for dealing with motor competition in ! suburban and country districts in various parts of the Dominion.
