MORE PHYSICIANS WANTED.
“There is one branch of the profession that is almost entirely neglected in New Zealand,” stated Dr. Valintine'at Palmerston North on Monday when speaking at the laying of the Maternity Home foundation stones. The speaker said he referred to the medical side of hospital work. In all the four main centres New Zealand had very excellent physicians, but in the secondary hospitals like Palmerston North, Wanganui, and Napier the medical side was to a large extent neglected, and that most important work was left in the main to house surgeons. It was a branch of the profession which, he thought, should be undertaken seriously. Until a year or two ago every young doctor who came to his office from the Otago University, was out to be a surgeon. Why? They were quite frank in their replies: It was going to pay best. That state of affairs was a great drawback to hospitals generally. He thought more men should take up the work of physicians.
