RAGLAN BY-ELECTION.
ALL PARTIES ACTIVE,
Raglan - has developed into a political storm centre of some magnitude. Five candidates are seeking election, and the leading lights of all the parties in the House are either taking or are about to take an active interest in the campaign. The official Reform candidate has the support of the Minister of Lands (Hon. A. D. McLeod) and Mr V. H. Potter (Roskill), and the Prime Minister •‘'will be in Raglan on Monday. Details of Mr Coates’ itinerary have not been finalised, but he will remain in the electorate /until Wednesday night, when he (will return to Wellington.
The Leader of the Opposition (Mr H. E. Holland) will leave for Raglan to-day to assist in the campaign of Mr L. Martin, the Labour nominee, who already has the help of Mr P. Fraser (Wellington Central), and Mr W. J. Jordan (Manukau). Moye than passing interest attaches to the assistants who are rallying to the support of the Liberal hope, Mr T. Parker. Sir Joseph Ward is already in the electorate, and he is to be joined by Mr W. A. Veitch, the leader of the Liberal revivalists. An indication that there is something in the report of a rapprochement between the opposition forces iiK the House outside Labour is found in the fact that Mr H. Atmore, the Independent member for Nelson, left last night to add his weight to the fight being made on behalf of Mr Parker. A suggestion has been made that it is the hope of the combined Liberals and Nationalists to win one seat, and thus regain official Opposition status. r
