PROPOSED AEROPLANE FLIGHT.
FROM BRISBANE TO AUCKLAND.
Auckland, September 16.
The attempt to cross the Tasman by aeroplane from Brisbane to Auckland may be made early next week by Flight Lieutenant K. M. Frewen, a well-known Australian aviator. Norfolk Island has been chosen for a mid-ocean stop, and arrangements have been made for the steamer Hinemoa, which left Auckland last evening, to land 20 cases of petrol there on Sunday.' The Auckland agents for, an oil company interested in the flight have already selected a landing ground at Mangere. Although official opinion is against the use of land machines for extended ocean ■llights it is not expected that opposition will he raised on this ground. Lieutenant Frewen proposes to fly alone, and it is estimated the journey will occupy 12 hours. The machine is a Bristol fighter known in Australia as “The Stormbird.” It is equipped with a 300 h.p. Sidde-ley-Puma engine. The distance along the route proposed is 1220 miles, the first Jap from Brisbane to Norfolk Island being 820 miles. The non-stop distance from Sydney to Auckland would be 1162 miles.
