AN AUSTRALIAN .CASE.

Van Haig Mar, aged 30 years, who recently stated in the Melbourne Court that he had for many years been impersonating a dead Australian soldier and had brought disgrace upon the family's name, has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by Judge Foster for having wounded Constable Stewart, at Oakleigh, on July 7 last. The alleged impersonation Was afterwards stated to be untrue,

Haig Mar attacked the constable with a tyre lever when endeavouring to escape arrest. Judge Foster commended the bravery of Constable Stewart in having persisted until he arrested the prisoner, although in a weak condition owing to injuries received at Haig Mai s hands.
