MOTOR TRANSPORT FOR DAIRY PRODUCE.
Pahiatua, Last Night,
'No less than six dairy factories operating in the district are* using lorries for the transport of their cheese and butter to the Wellington cool stores. Previously the whole of this product went by rail. It is stated it would continue to do so if reductions from the allegedly very high railagojircights could have been obtained. It is stated the saving of one factory will be as much as 9/- per ton both ways, while in every instance considerable saving is being made. (Back loading for lorries is easily obtainable.
It would appear that the carriage by motor of dairy produce has come to stay. One of the largest dairy factories approached the Railway Department on the question of meeting the competition of lorries, the company in question offering to use the railway provided certain rates were charged.
