FOXTON TENNIS CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING,
There was a good attendance of members at the annual general meeting of the Foxton Tennis Club held on Thursday evening in the Racing Club office. The meeting was presided over by Mr. L. C. Bryant owing to the unavoidable absence of the president (Mr. McMurray). Apologies for absence were also received from Mr. J. K. liornblow and Mesdames F. C. Hay, 11. Hornblow, Misses M. Stevenson, R. Carmout, and L. Thompson. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report was read as follows: —“Your committee has pleasure in reporting that the club has made more progress during the past year than in any previous year qf its existence. of the new courts seemed to act as a stimulus to members and the ‘Working Bees’ had the courts in excellent condition for opening day which took place on December 4th, 1926. The club’s membership shows the satisfactory increase of over 100 per cent, above that of last year, which proves the growing popularity of the game. In order to encourage pupils of the District High School to take.up tennis, and to take an interest in the club’s activities they were allowed to join for the small sub. of 5/- per annum. This offer was freely taken , advantage of, 20 becoming members. Some of these give promise of becoming excellent exponents of the game and were chosen to represent the club in some of its matches. Owing to the wet season we did not play as many matches with sister clubs as usual. The A team only playing 2 against Levin Club, winning one and losing one. The B team played 3 matches two against Levin and one against Bulls and were beaten by a narrow margin in each. case. The Walton Rose Bowl (Handicap) for the ladies was fairly keenly competed for and we congratulate Miss R. Perreau in winning the final from Mrs. McMurray. The Club Cup (Handicap) was won by R. McMurray with Mr. H. Ihle as runner-up. Various efforts were launched during the year to augment our funds and thanks to the ladies they were very successful, over £75 being obtained. Well wishers and supporters gave donations amounting to £l4 25., and we appreciate their practical interest in the club very much. It is satisfactory to know that, notwithstanding the heavy expenditure in acquiring, laying clown and equipping the courts, everything is paid for and we have considerably reduced the mortgage as well, §o that our financial jrosition is very good indeed. During the year the Manawatu Tennis Association was formed and this will be of great benefit to all clubs within its area, and we pay tribute to.the Palmerston North enthusiasts who brought this into being. Our geographical position makes us the most central of the newly formed Association, the farthest away club being within an hour’s drive by ear. Therefore the question of running a tournament this season should have our attention. We have also to consider the matter of erecting a pavilion and the arranging for a caretaker is most urgent. We tend our thanks to the citizens who have supported us in many ways and we trust that our efforts to provide clean healthy sport for both sexes will be appreciated. To the , Press we convey our appreciation for the publicity given at all times to our club affairs. In conclusion we trust that every member will take a lively and keen interest in the welfare of the club, and if possible to make the coming year a even more successful year than this.” The chairman in commenting on the report said the lady’s membership had done splendidly. He thought the men could have done better. The club coxdd do with more male members. The Mayor (Mr. M. E. Pdrreau) congratulated the club on the very fine arid comprehensive report submitted. He appreciated the concession made to school pupils. There were several suggestions embodied in the report that were worthy of serious consideration. The balance-sheet showed re- . eeipts £145 2s 5d anti expenditure £143 15s Gd. The chairman pointed out that about £BS of the expenditure shown on the balance-sheet wonild not be reeuring. The club was in good financial position and bad a very valuable asset in their present grounds. i ELECTION OF OFFICERS. Patron: Mr. F. Robinson; president : j\lr. R.
