FOOTBALL.

The secretary of the Foxton Football Club .received word yesterday that Huia Juniors' will be unable to journey to Foxton next Saturday and the game has definitely been cancelled. RANFURLY SHIELD RESULTS. MANAWHENUA £1369 IN CREDIT A meeting of the Management Committee of the Manawhenua Rugby Union was held at Levin yesterday when delegates from both districts were present. A letter was received from the Taranaki Union expressing their thanks to the Management Committee for the hospitality shown the visiting members of the Union. The chairman announced that after paying all accounts the Union would be £1369' in credit with no further commitments for the sea- / son. The match, Manawhenua v. Otago, he stated. would clear its own expenses. It was resolved on the motion of the chairman that the sum of £I2OO be placed on fixed deposit for the ensuing nine months. It was also decided that the special general meeting which was to be held at Levin on Monday for the purpose of considering Horowhenua’s request for equal representation, was postponed until September 23rd. FIRST ALL BLACK TRIAL GAME Napier, Last Night. The first of the All Blacks Rugby trials was played at McLean Park, Napier, this afternoon when the Combined Wairarapa-Bush team ' met the East Coast combination (Hawke’s Bay, Poverty Bay and East Coast), the latter winning by 23 points to 8. CANTERBURY DEFEAT SOUTH CANTERBURY. Christchurch, Last Night. The South Canterbury Union has been agitating strenuously since Canterbury won the Ranfurly Shield to have the match with Canterbury to-day declared a Shield match. The Union still pressed the claim after the New Zealand Union had ruled against it. The match was played to-day and South Canterbury were completely overwhelmed being beaten by 47 points to 7 by the Canterbury team. The ground was fast. On the last two occasions the teams have met South Canterbury have been victorious, but to-day after the first quarter of an hour never looked like it. OTAGO DEFEAT MANAWjHENUA. BY ONE POINT. At Levin yesterday, under ideal weather conditions and before a ' large attendance, Otago representatives defeated Manawhenua by the narrow margirt of one point, the final scores being Otago 12 points — Manawhenua 11. The game was fast and open and in the last quarter of an hour when a bare couple of points separated the teams, excitement was intense. When Jacob landed a penalty goal to make the score 11 —9 in Manawhenua’s favour, with but a few minutes to " play it looked as though they had the game won. Right on time the Otago rearguard swung across a sweeping attack that saw Webb race over at the corner to give the blues the game by just one point. On the day’s play there was little difference in the teams, but Manawhenua undoubtedly had the worst of the luck. A distinct improvement was noticeable in the standard of the Manawhenua back play, Parata played a really fine game, his handling being extremely safe while he sent his backs away at every opportunity. Opposite him was another star performer in Holben, who played a nippy and clever game. Otago’s inside backs were superior to the Manawhenua combination. In the forwards Otago fielded a formidable and well-balanced pack which kept Manawhenua very actively employed throughout. Hore and Souter showed themselves a clever pair of hookers, the Otago men being, on the whole, superior - in the set scrums. For Manawhenua Anderson, Crawford, Galpin and Tremewan played a hefty hustling game throughout in the shock battalion, while Jacob was us usual in the centre of things, although the big skipper was not up to the form of his Taranaki game. Taken as a whole, the match was one of the best and certainly the evenest which Manawhenua has contested this season. FOXTON’S REQUEST. DISCUSSED BY HOROWHENUA COUNCIL. MORE DEPUTATIONS. At last night’s meeting of the . Horowhenua Rugby Council, held at Levin, the following letter was read from the secretay of the Fox.ton Football Club: “I am directed to inform you that at a public meeting convened by my club, the following resolution was carried: ‘That this meeting of citizens, and representatives of Foxton Rugby football clubs resolves that in order to promote the best interests of our national game locally, that the Horowhenua Rugby Council take the necessary steps, through the Mana-watu-Horowhenua Rugby Union, to have the borough of Foxton included within the Manawatu Rugby

Union’s boundary and that delegates be permitted to appear before the Manawatu-Horowlienua Union to give reasons in support of this request.” The letter went on to state that it was understood that flic question of boundaries was to be discussed at a meeting of the •combined Unions and asked that the Horowhenua Council facilitate the request contained in the above resolution.

Mr. Robson (Shannon) said he did not see that the Foxton Club should be allowed to override the Awahou Clhb if the latter desired to remain in the Horowhenua boundary.

Mr. F. Robinson (Awahou) informed the meeting that the only trouble in Foxton was that the two local clubs (Awahou and Foxton) were fighting against each other. The Foxton Club seemed to be out to smash the Awahou Club instead of trying to amalgamate with it. The business people and supporters should try and bring about a union of the two clubs. The Foxton Club had received just as fair treatment at the hands of the Council as any other club. He then made a statement in reference to his attitude re the playing of the Bebbington Shield at Foxton. The Foxton people had not been informed of the steps he had taken re providing fencing material and Mr. Neville (the Foxton delegate) had not made his (Mr Robinson’s) action in the matter clear.

The chairman (Mr. O’Connor) said the request was one that came within the province of the Council to deal with.

Mr. Richards (Shannon): Awahou is satisfied and I object to the matter going to the combined un-

Mr. Joyoe (Weraroa): The deputation is not representative of Foxton'football, but only of the Foxton Club.

Mr. F. Robinson: Half the Awahou players live across the Manawatu river and if the boundaries were altered it would break up the chib.

Mr. Robson moved: “That the Council hear a deputation comprising three representatives of the Foxton Club and three representatives of the Awahou Club on the proposal to have the Foxton borough excluded front the Horowhenua boundary.” The motion was seconded by Mr. Anderson (County) and carried. It was decided to hear the deputation on Tuesday evening next at Levin.

At a subsequent meeting of the Manawatu-Horowhenua management committee a. copy of the same letter was read and on the motion of Mr. S. Austin, seconded by Mr. Casey it was resolved that the Foxton Club be informed that its request must be forwarded through the Horowhenua Council to the combined union.

FOXTON DELEGATE NOT PRESENT.

Mr W. Neville, the Foxton Club delegate, was not present at the Horowhenua meeting, when the above matter was discussed. Mr. Neville informs us that he was informed by telephone that a meeting of the Council was to be held at 8 o’clock last evening. He hired a taxi and got there a little before 8 p.m., what time the meeting was Just closing.
