THE CEMETERY.
At last night’s Borough Council meeting the local Cemetery came in for a good deal of discussion. Cr. Cowley said that now the Cemetery Account was in a good position he would like to see a metal road formed from gate to gate through the Cemetery. Cr. Thompson said that the place was becoming overrun with noxious weeds, gorse and briar, and should be cleared up. The Clerk pointed out that in a short time it would be necessary for the Council to have the rest of the reserve surveyed and plotted out, and this would make a big hole in the present credit balance.
It was decided to form a sand road and grade same up and the road foreman is to be instructed to eradicate all noxious weeds in the cemetery. CARE OP GRAVES.
The Mayor suggested that the Council undertake the care of plots for which a small annual fee could be charged. Cr. Thompson outlined his experience in connection with the care of plots at the Christchurch Cemetery, for which he had paid a lump sum of £5. After 45 years the plot was in excellent order and he thought it would be a wise move on the part of the Council to adopt the Mayor’s suggestion. The Mayor: If the suggestion were adopted it would mean permanent employment for an extra man. The Council is a permanent body and there would be no fear of the work not being carried out in years to. come. Cr. Parkin also spoke of a similar practice obtaining in the Addington Cemetery. It was decided that the Council undertake to keep graves in order at the Cemetery for the sum of 15/per annum, and that a circular letter be sent to all those who have relatives buried in the cemetery to this effect.
