CORRESPONDENCE

(To the Editor.

Sir, —As a county ratepayer and a payer of motor tax, I would respectfully draw the Manawatu County Council’s attention to the bad state of the main highway, if it is included as a main highway, from Sorensen’s corner to Kairanga county boundary at Rangiotu. It is, sir, a succession of pot holes and no matter how well sprung a car may be or at what pace one travels the jarring is continuous. How is it, sir, that there is such an improvement in the road from Rangiotu to Palmerston? I was informed by a member of the Council that the Highways Board subsidised the Council for road maintenance. If that is correct then all I can say is that the subsidy has not been spent on this much-used road between Foxton and Palmerston. I think, sir, it is high time that the engineer of the Highways Board or some other officer made an inspection of this road and put a few questions to the County Council. What does the Chairman of the County 'Council think of the road. Perhaps, sir, he will explain to the public why this road is in such a bad state. Thanking you in anticipation. I am etc., COUNTY RATEPAYER,
