DEARER ELOQUENCE?

LEGISLATORS WANT A RISE.

SUPERANNUATION TOO.

Wellington, September 8. A meeting of members of the House of Representatives to-day discussed the question of asking the Government to increase private members’ honorariums, and appointed a committee to present members’ views to Cabinet. Members of the Lower House formerly received £SOO a year, but this was reduced to £450 in 1922, when the civil service salary “cuts” were made.

It is now considered that the amount should be made to somewhere near £650. Members point out that they are subjected to considerable expense in travelling and lodging, which far outweigh any concessions received.

Members of Legislative 'Council now receive £350 a year and there is no present suggestion that they are mloving for an increase, but there has been talk of the inauguration of a superannuation scheme for Parliamentarians after nine years’ service in the House of Representatives.
