RANFURLY SHIELD.
What is believed to be an indication by the Hawke’s Bay Rugby Un-
ion that it will not now take thes'’' 5 '’' Ranfurly Shield appeal to the Supreme Court was given at a meeting when it was decided to ask the New Zealand Union for instructions as to where to forward the trophy. The decision is taken in well-informed circles as indicating that Hawke’s Bay will hand the shield to the new holders and then let the matter drop. It was a day when the better team won, although the score (17 to nil) can hardly be taken as an indication of the closeness of the game. On a dry ground it would be hard to say how the game would have ended, but .certain it is that the Auckland backs would have played even better football. By defeating Poneke at Wellington on Saturday, Old Boys became the champion senior team in the Wellington Union. A gold medal to be presented to the most improved player in the Foxton juniors is to be awarded to Jeff Williams, with Hartley as run-ner-up. Both players have shone out conspicuously during the season. The following Foxton Club players have been selected in the rep. team to play Rangitikei at Marton, on Saturday:—Hartley and Huff emergency. •
