After an all night sitting, the House of Representatives passed >the Samoa Amendment Bill at 7.15 /a.m. yesterday, numbers of amendments being egsily defeated. Sir Maui Pomare, speaking as a Polynesian, said there was the closest relationship between the Maori of New Zealand and the Samoan, but there was this material difference, that whereas the Samoans were a conquered people, the Maoris came into the British Empire of their own free will. New Zealand had been given a sacred trust to hold'Samoa for the Samoans until they were able to walk on their own feet. It Avas .therefore part of New Zealand’s duty to train them to look after themselves. New Zealand must act with the spirit of absolute justice so as to inspire.the Samoans Avith confidence in 'the British system.
On the question that the Bill be read a third time another division was called for which the votes, were: For the Bill 41; against 12.
