PROPHECY AND ZIONISM

In moving a vote of thanks to Dr. Alexander Goldstein, Zionist envoy, at the conclusion of his lecture in the Wellington Town Hall on Sunday evening, the Minister of Education (Hon. R. A. Wright) said the lecturer seemed surprised that there were so many people present who were non-Jewish. He wanted to tell Dr. Goldstein the reason. It was this: large numbers of people not only in 'New Zealand but throughout the British Empire were taught many years before.the Zionist movement was ever dreamt of that the time would come when the Jews would return to Palestine. Study of the Hebrew Scriptures led to that conclusion; and although there seemed no possibility at that time of anything of the kind happening, yet here, in our own times, it was happening and had happened. (Applause). The Hebrew prophets foretold the destruction of the Kingdom of Israel and the miseries that would' be suffered,, but the prophets had also said that the Hebrew people would return to Palestine. The speaker said lie was one of those who firmly believed that that must come to pass, and although the movement was now in its infancy, the time would come when the country would have its own laws and its own Government. (Applause).
