MANAWATU RIVER PUNT

WARNING BOARD AT SHANNON

FOR MOTORISTS

In a letter which came before the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday, Mr. W. McKenzie, secretary of the Palmerston North branch of the Wellington Automobile Club, stated that quite a number of complaints had been received from motorists and others that they bad travelled to the Manawatu bridge site at Shannon only to find that the punt was unworkable owing to the river being flooded. He suggested that a notice be put in a .conspicuous place in 'Shannon indicating when the punt was unwoikable' from flood or other causes. The writer compared the signs erected at the ends of the Manawatu Gorge, which were reversible affairs, to show whether the road was open or blocked. The chairman (Mr. Monk) moved that the secretary be notified that the Council had no objection to the club erecting such a sign in or neai Shannon; and suggest that one of the Borough staff in Shannon be asked to operate it. The chairman added that the County Council had no permanent man who could attend to it. Arrangements could he made by the club to have the fexiy man notify the Shannon Borough office when the river was impassable. Cr. Barber stated that he spoke about the matter to the Shannon Town Clerk who practically understood to cany* out the arrangement. The motion was carried.
